Leona M. Ewing, 91, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014 at VIP Manor in Wood River, Illinois. Leona was born in Alton on July 15, 1922 to Richard and Margaret (Walker) Williams, both deceased.
Leona graduated from Alton High School in 1940 and studied Cosmetology in Dayton, Ohio before returning to Alton to work at the Small Arms & Munitions Plant in St. Louis during World War II.
In 1949, she married Daniel F. Ewing, a veteran of WW II; he preceded her in death in 1965. Leona worked for many years at St. Joseph’s Hospital until retiring due to its closing. In 1988, Leona and her mother moved to Chula Vista, CA where in addition to caring for her aging mother, she volunteered as a Foster Grandparent for several years. She returned to Alton in 2006.
Leona is survived by a son, Danny L. Ewing of Cheyenne, WY; a granddaughter, Taylor (Carl) Lane of Cheyenne, WY; two great grandchildren, Ileah and Taylon; a brother, Clayton R. Williams of Alton; a sister, Nancy L. Williams of Alton; three beloved nieces, Elizabeth Davis of Brooklyn N.Y., Nancy Davis of the Bronx, N.Y., and Shari Andrews of Chicago, Ill; one nephew, Philip B. Davis of Rochester, N.Y. ; two great nieces; two great nephews and a host of beloved cousins and friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Olive and Lloyd (Sam) Davis; a nephew, Lloyd J. Davis II; and her very dear friends, Sarah Chatman, Uris Matlock and JoAnn Searles.
