Joyce Lorraine Gholson, 76, passed away at 12:03 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2014 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 21, 1937 in Alton, she was a daughter of Vern Wesley and Mildred Gladys (Astroth) Eades.
She married James Edward Gholson Dec. 18, 1954 at St. John United Church of Christ in Wood River, and although they were married 59 years, they celebrated with another couple at the church their 60th wedding anniversary.
Joyce was very active in her church, particularly in Bible study and preparing funeral luncheons, for 60 years. She was an election judge at her local polling place, active in the Wood River/East Alton Drum Corps, and loved to travel all over the U.S. with her family.
She is survived by her husband, James; a son, Mark Edward Gholson of Wood River; two daughters, Laurel Lorraine (Joe) Heitzman of Rosewood Heights and Kathy Marie Gholson of Wood River; and two grandchildren, Holly Lorraine Heitzman and Joshua Paul Heitzman.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, June Marie Tucker.
Visitation will be Thursday, Apr. 24 at Paynic Home for Funerals from 4 p.m. until services begin at 7 p.m. Rev. Michael Southcombe will officiate.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Apr. 25 at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
