John Niehaus

Rosewood Heights |

John J. Niehaus, 83, traveled into the open arms of Jesus with his loving family by his side on March 12, 2015, after suffering with Alzheimer's for several years.

He was born in Litchfield, IL on December 2, 1931  to John W. and Frieda (Rosenthal) Niehaus of Mt. Olive, IL.  John was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Mt. Olive.

He was a graduate of Mt. Olive High School in 1949 and Rankin Technical College in 1951.

On March 22, 1952, he met the love of his life and on July 26, 1953, he and June Busch were united in marriage and lived almost all of their wedded life in Rosewood Heights.  She is left to mourn him.  To that union, three children were born and all are left to mourn him: son, John H. Niehaus of Mt. Olive; daughters, Janay Niehaus of Chicago and Janelle (Joe) Cibula of Mason, OH; six grandchildren, Andrrea (Rodney) Stewart of Houston, TX, Ashley (Evan) Sikorski of Cypress, TX, Alyssa Niehaus of Litchfield, Amber Niehaus of Mt. Olive, Tyler Cibula and Tanner Cibula of Mason, OH; two great grandsons, Damen Stewart and Conner Stewart of Houston, TX; one sister-in-law and two brothers-in-law, Dorene and John Sullivant of Bethalto, Bill E. Schaaf of Brighton; five nieces and one nephew and their spouses.

He was especially proud of his children and grandchildren and all their accomplishments.  He tried to attend many of their sporting events.  He was very kind and loving soul to all and never met a stranger.  His love was his family, his collie dogs, fishing, Rosewood Heights Fire Department, camping trips with his family all over the United States, Canada, Alaska and Nova Scotia, and cruises with family to the Caribbean, Panama Canal and Nova Scotia.

He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Wood River for 58 years, where he volunteered his time on consistory, funeral dinners, ushering and helping with repair jobs.  He was a volunteer fireman of Rosewood Heights Fire Department for 53 years before retiring in 2010.  He retired from Anheuser-Busch in St. Louis after 26 years as a machinist and was in the Navy Reserves for 8 years from 1951 to 1959.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his parents-in-law, Howard and Louise Busch of Brighton; and sister-in-law, Joann Schaaf of Brighton.

Visitation will be Sunday, March 16 from 4-8 p.m. with funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Monday, both at St. John United Church of Christ, 228 N. 6th St, Wood River, IL.

Burial will follow in Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ in Wood River or Rosewood Heights Fire Department.
