John E. Ray, Sr., 92, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Eunice Smith Rehabilitation in Alton.  He was born August 5, 1923 in Batchtown, Ill. to John L. and Margaret (Bull) Ray. 

He married Thelma M. Richards Oct. 18, 1948 in Piasa, Ill.  John was veteran of the United States Navy and served his country during WWII.  He worked for 38 years at Alton Box Board, retiring as a carpenter, and was a member of Heartland Baptist Church in Alton.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Ray of Rosewood Heights; son John E. Ray, Jr. of Alton; 2 grandchildren, Mark (Brenda) Meyer and Aaron (Lauren) Meyer; 2 step grandchildren, Joyce Meyer and Janice Ervin; 6 great grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Drew, Cheyenne, Claire, and Ethan; three brothers, Donald Ray of Bunker Hill, Gary (Sharron) Ray of Rosewood Heights, and Ronald (Lonna) Ray of Florida; two sisters, Margaret June (Bob) Hurley and Billie Jean Mullink, all of Bunker Hill; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Ray of Bunker Hill; and a son-in-law, Matthew Meyer of Bethalto.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Gloria Meyer; his parents; a sister, Lela Welch; and two brothers, Wayne and James Ray.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Heartland Baptist Church in Alton.  Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full military honors by Alton VFW Post #1308 Ritual Team.  Memorials can be made to Heartland Baptist Church or the National Parkinson Foundation.
