Jerry Wayne Cherry, age 57, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2015, at his home with his family by his side.
He was born September 2, 1957 in Wood River, the son of James and Florence (Terry) Cherry. He married Sherry Woolverton on January 3, 2003 in Jersey County and she survives.
Jerry was an active member of the Machinist’s Local District #9. He enjoyed sports, especially the Cardinals and Rams, as well as wrestling. He loved fishing and gardening. Jerry’s greatest love was his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Sherry; he is survived by six children and their spouses, Andrea and J.D. Grant of S. Roxana, Chris Cherry of Cottage Hills, Nathan and Courtney Gillson of Brighton, Dawn and Darrell Herbst of Alton, Quentin Gillson, and Jasmine Gillson, both of Bunker Hill; his siblings and their spouses, Joyce and George Schallenberg of Alton, and Danny and Starlla Cherry of Brighton; six grandchildren, Samantha Irwin, Wyatt Grant, Alyssa Herbst, Dylan Herbst, Dominik Gillson, and Kaitlyn Gillson; and many nieces, nephews, and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert “Bob” Cherry.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 19, 2015 from 4 to 8:00 pm at the Greater Alton Church in East Alton. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 20, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the church. Rev. Tim Gill officiating.
Burial will take place in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Greater Alton Church, BJC Hospice, or to the Leukemia Foundation.
