Jereline Gipson

Jereline (Smith) Gipson , 92 entered into eternal peace on Thursday, May 19th at her home with her family  by her side.

Jereline was born September 24, 1923 to the union of the late Chester Smith and Elnora Smith.  She attended public school in Wynn, Arkansas and later moved to Alton, IL in 1944.  On October 17, 1940, the former Ms. Jereline Smith married the late John Gipson, Sr. 

Sister Gipson received Christ at an early age. She became a member of Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in the 1980’s under the leadership of Pastor A.C. Hall. Sister Gipson continued to serve the Lord at Tabernacle under the leadership of Pastor John W. Buford.  She has been a longtime member of Tabernacle for over 40 years.

Jereline enjoyed fishing, walking , cooking, and gardening.  Jereline was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Her grandchildren will cherish the many memories of her taking them fishing. 

In addition to her husband John Gipson, she was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Elnora Smith, two daughters, Gerldine “Jenny” Moore and Delores Jean Burnett and five grandchildren.

She leaves to cherish fond memories: Five Sons ~ Joe Willie Gipson of Alton; John Gipson Jr. of Los Angeles; Darmon (Paula ) Gipson of Alton;  Abraham Gipson of Alton;  and  Andri (Tracy) Cooley of Alton; four daughters ~ Willa Jean Thomas, Virginia (Robert) Hinton, Darlene (James) Elliott, Gigi (Manuel) Taylor-Bey all of Alton; a brother, Robert Smith, of West Memphis;  49 grandchildren; 101 great grandchildren; and 36 great- great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will convene Saturday, May 28, 2016 from 9 until time 11:00 a.m. at Deliverance Temple C.O.G.I.C.  Reverend Tony Thompson will eulogize.  Family and friends will meet at Harrison Funeral Chapel Tuesday, May 31, 2016 at 11:15 a.m. for interment at Alton National Cemetery.  Guest registry and condolences are available at www.harrisonfuenralchapel.com  Services entrusted to Harrison Funeral Chapel and Cremation Center of Alton.
