James Russell Howell, 78, died at 1:30 a.m., Thursday, January 8, 2015 at the Jefferson Barracks Medical Center in St. Louis, MO.
He was born in St. Charles, Mo. on Dec. 2, 1936, and was the son of the late Arthur & Vallie Lorraine (Simpson) Howell.
James graduated in 1954 from St. Charles High School, and served his country with the U.S. Army. For many years he owned and operated Howell's Midway Station near Delhi, and had also worked as a mechanic at Sunderland Motor Company in Jerseyville.
He married the former Mary Joanne Killion on June 7, 1958 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, and she passed away on Nov. 18, 2012.
Surviving are a daughter & son in law, Charlotte & Chuck Brainerd of Grafton; three sons & daughters in law, John & Jackie Howell and Russell "Pat" & Laura Howell all of Jerseyville, and Eugene "Gene" & Paula Howell of Dow; 10 Grandchildren, Joseph Howell and Justin Howell both of Mt. Vernon, Jacob Howell, Nicholas Howell, Natalie Howell all of Jerseyville, Erick Howell, Matthew Howell, Chevi Pack, and Chase Pack all of Dow, and Lydia Hamilton of Jerseyville; a sister, Patty Hammett of St. Charles, Mo.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Louis Howell on Feb. 10, 2001; a grandson, Dyaln Howell; three brothers, Oscar Howell, Arthur Howell Jr., and Carl Howell; and a sister, Eileen Thomas.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Monday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Tuesday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.
Burial will take place in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville, with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 conducting military graveside rites.
Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville.
