Harry Oscar Thurman, 87, of Godfrey, formerly of Bushnell, IL passed away on September 15, 2013, at the Fountains IV in Godfrey.
Harry was born on September 11, 1926, in Galesburg, IL to Ora Vernon and Eugenia Buelah Ditmars Thurman.
He married Phyllis Lee Gorke on September 4, 1948 in Metropolis, IL. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2008.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Warren Thurman and one sister, Geraldine Emory Webb.
He is survived by one sister, Nellie Yarde of Thornton, Colorado; and two daughters, Nancy (Michael) Wilson of Godfrey and Jayne (Larry) Jones of Macomb, IL; 4 grandsons: Eric Ingles of Carson City, Nevada; Andrew (Daphne) Ingles of Bloomington, IL; Anthony Ingles of Godfrey; and Nicholas (Jenny) Jones of Libertyville, IL, 2 granddaughters: Sarah Jones of Antioch, IL and Jennifer (Darren) Brainerd of Dow, IL; 3 great-granddaughters and 3 great-grandsons.
A Navy veteran, he served 3 years (1944-1947) during WWII aboard the USS Monrova APA-31, attaining the rank of Signalman Third Class. He later served in the Korean War (1951-1952) where he was assigned to the USS Hopewell DD-681, attaining the rank of Quartermaster Third Class.
Mr. Thurman worked for Hummel Lumber Company in Bushnell for 33 years, retiring in 1988. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.
Cremation has been accorded. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday September 28, 2013 at Two Rivers Winery in Grafton. The Rev. David Crowley of First Presbyterian Church of Alton will officiate.
Military rites will be administered by the Grafton American Legion. A burial of the ashes of Harry and Phyllis Thurman will be held at a later date at the Bushnell, IL cemetery.
