H. Wayne “Corky” Hampton, 71, passed away after a lengthy illness at 12:55 am Friday, August 21, 2015, at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton.
He was born on May 11, 1944, in Alton, the son of the late Harold and Lorraine (Wethington) Hampton.
Wayne was a Veteran of the United States Air Force from 1962 - 1966. He then served on the Alton Police Department for 22.5 years retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the Southern Illinois Show Stoppers, Alton Motorboat Club and a former Alton Dragway Racer.
Wayne married Lura Davis on April 21, 1967, in Alton. She survives.
In addition to his wife, Wayne is survived by two daughters and their spouses; Heather (Ricky) Freeman of Godfrey, Leslie (Derek) Forrester of Moro; four grandchildren Tabitha and Brandon Freeman, and Nathaniel and Alexander Forrester; six siblings and their spouses Don (Ellen) Hampton, Linda (Frank) Cerutti, Joyce (Jay) Curry, John (Jan) Hampton, Greg (Faith) Hampton, Bobby (Teresa) Hinthorne; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters Marilyn Ohley-Stemm and Karen Hinthorne.
There will be no public services per his wishes.
Cremation rites will be accorded.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.
