Gwenlyn “Gwen” J. Powell, 74, went to be with her Heavenly father at 5:10 am Thursday, February 20, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Health Care in Alton.
She was born on December 29, 1939 in Alton, IL, the daughter of Oliver and Bernice (Unverzogt) Dustman.
She married Lloyd Powell on June 7, 1955. He preceded her in death on February 6, 1986.
Gwen was a waitress at Sunray Café in Cottage Hills and Dick and Barbs, now Ned’s Place in Bethalto. She was a member of the Cottage Hills Baptist Church. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, playing gin rummy with her friend, Kaye and most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by three children and their spouses, Randy and Ethel Powell of Lincoln, TX, Terri and Mike Elledge of Cottage Hills and Brad and Renee Powell of Stafford, VA; six grandchildren, Alana, Kim, Kerrie, Chris, Janette and Ashley; fourteen great grandchildren, Alley, Patton, Dillion, Bentley, Kaylee, Kayla, Tyler, Christina, Joshua, Gage, Gavin, Kendall, John and Chase; a sister and her husband, Golda and Fred Schuett of Ontario, OR and her best friends, Kaye Heaton of Fosterburg and Glenda Sparrowk of Bethalto.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Rhonda Powell, a brother, Larry Dustman and a step brother, Roy Roberts.
Visitation will be from 10 am until services at 12 Noon Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Clyde Myers officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society for breast cancer research.
