Gregory Paul Shewmake, 53, passed away suddenly on January 4, 2014 in Nutwood.Born June 29, 1960 to Kay (Scott) Shewmake of Wood River and the late Paul Shewmake. He graduated from East Alton-Wood River High School in 1978 and Ranken Technical School. We worked at SIU-E as an Operating Engineer, Local 399, for the past 15 years.He married Janet Lynn Ringering on July 7, 1984. They would have celebrated 30 years of marriage this July.In addition to his wife and mother; he is survived by his daughters, Melissa Shewmake and Elizabeth Shewmake; grandson, Conner Paul Shewmake; brother, Terry (Judy) Shewmake; nephew, Zachary Shewmake; brother-in-law, Robert (Julie) Ringering; nephew and niece, Matthew and Katie Ringering; and father-in-law, Roger Ringering.He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandson, Conner Paul. Greg loved to tell stories and always left everyone laughing.He was preceded in death by his father; sister, Sherry; mother-in-law, Wanda Lou Ringering; his maternal grandparents, Edward and Lady Scott; and his paternal grandmother, Mabel Shewmake.In celebration of his life, there will be a visitation on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 from 3-8 p.m. at St. John United Church of Christ, 228 N. 6th St., Wood River.Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ with Pastor Michael Southcombe officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.Memorials may be given to St. John United Church of Christ.
