SPRINGFIELD- George A. Whorten Sr., 86, died on Monday, February 11, 2013 at his residence.He was born on March 23, 1926 in Wrights, Il, and was the son of the late Richard & Mattie (Mason) Whorten.After serving his country during World War II with the U.S. Navy, he met and married his wife the former Donna Reed. The two married on Oct. 22, 1946 in Alton, and together they have shared 66 years together.He worked and retired from Catepillar Tractor Company in Peoria, where he and Donna lived and raised their family of four children.George was a member of the Springfield Southern Baptist Church and was a past master of the Clarence E. Baker Masonic Lodge #1114 AF&AM. He also served as a deacon at the First Baptist Church in Lake Alfred, Florida, and was an avid fisherman and St. Louis Cardinal and Chicago Bears fan.Surviving are his wife, Donna Whorten of Springfield; his four children & their spouses, Linda Bremer of Brookport, Vicki & Ralph Longbucco of Germantown Hills, George & Julie Whorten Jr. of Goodfield, and Gregory & Becky Whorten of Springfield; 10 Grandchildren; 13 Great Grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Dale Whorten, Richard Whorten and Murl Dean Whorten; and five sisters, Mary Ayres, Geraldine Felts, Burl Ferenbach, Alice Whorten, and Jackie Henderson.Visitation will be from 9-10 a.m, Thursday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.Graveside rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Hickory Grove Cemetery in Wrights.Memorials may be given to the Honor Flight of Illinois or to the Springfield Southern Baptist Church.
