Eugene Kruckeberg

Alton |

Eugene Frederick Kruckeberg passed away on the afternoon of Friday December 27, 2013. He was 95.

Eugene was born in Fort Russell Township, near Prairietown, Illinois on July 14, 1918 - the son of Edward C. Kruckeberg and Matilda (Dustmann) Kruckeberg and was raised on a family farm.  During World War 2, he served on an anti-aircraft detail in the Army.  After his honorable discharge, he studied at Rankin Technical School, and became a Machinist.

He spent his working life at Owens- Illinois Glass Company, manufacturing parts and assembling bottling machines.

Eugene was married to Virginia Faye Tomlinson on June 27, 1946. She preceded him in death on February 17, 2013. He is survived by his children Nancy (John) Tucker of Alton, IL and Kevin (Rori) Kruckeberg of Lake Villa, IL.  He was a loving grandfather to five and great-grandfather to six children.

Eugene enjoyed polka festivals and ballroom dancing with his beloved Virginia, but he also found time to master bowling, fishing, gardening, and golf.  He had five holes-in-one in his golfing days, with his last one tallied at age 91. Ladies wanted him as a dance partner, men wanted him as a teammate, and ground moles in the church yard feared him.  He was unbeatable at Euchre and he made us laugh all the way to his last breaths.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Irene (Norval) Bunt, and his brother Clifford (Charlene) Kruckeberg.  He loved his family and was “Uncle Gene” to so many.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 on Monday December 30 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, IL.  On Tuesday December 31, a visitation will continue at Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey, IL at 10 am with a Funeral Service beginning at 11 am.
