Elmer Jr.

Elmer Starkey Jr, 84, passed away at 2:04 pm Friday, July 4, 2014 at Christian Northeast Hospital in St. Louis, MO. 

He was born on November 10, 1929 in East Alton, IL at his parent’s home. Son of the late Elmer Mervin and Irene Anna Charlotte (Hassmann) Starkey.

He married Elizabeth M. (Bond) Starkey on June 26, 1960 in Centralia, IL.  She survives.

Elmer served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict.  He was a life time farmer in Madison County, first in Rosewood Heights with his father until they sold the property and then he moved to Moro where they bought the new farm. He farmed many acres of ground in corn, wheat and soybeans and raised several heads of cattle and hogs. Elmer established the Key Star Farm’s, Inc. and retired as its president. He was a member of the Bethalto United Methodist Church for over 50 years and of the Madison County Farm Bureau, where his father had served on the board.  He was chosen to represent the Moro District at one time. He was a lifetime member of the Illinois Retired Teachers Association and enjoyed traveling all over the world with his wife.

In addition to his wife of 54 years, he is survived by a sister, Eileen Becker of Moro; Niece Deborah Becker of Moro and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; uncles and aunts.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf in Bethalto.

Visitation will continue from 1:30 pm until time of funeral service at 2 pm on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at the Bethalto United Methodist Church with Pastor Joe Richards officiating.

Burial will be at Bethalto United Methodist Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Bethalto UMC, 5 A’s, or Charity of One’s Choice.
