Ellen M. Richey, 94, of East Alton, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at VIP Manor in Wood River.

  Ellen was an active member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Cottage Hills, Ill., where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School, working in the Ladies Association, and making Evangelism calls.

  Her Christian faith and love of family was of most importance.  She shared Jesus, showed joy in working for her Lord, and served others where needed.

  She was born Nov. 13, 1919 in Troy, Ill. to Henry and Martha (Schultz) Taake.

  Ellen married Norman L. Richey July 24, 1943 in Alton.  He preceded her in death Sept. 26, 1990.  Also preceding her in death are a sister, Carol Schaaf and a brother, Edward Smith.

  She is survived by two daughters, Judith (Paul) Zabel of Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, and Susan Croll of Springfield, Mo.; a son, James (Janis) Richey of Bunker Hill, Ill.; six grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Smith of Carrollton, Ill.; and a brother, Orville Taake of Jerseyville, Ill.

  The Celebration of Ellen’s New Life in Heaven will be at Concordia Lutheran Church in Cottage Hills.  Visitation will be Monday, Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. until services begin at 11 a.m.  The Rev. Matthew Gehrke will officiate.

  Interment will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Concordia Lutheran Church.
