Donald Harry Rhodes

Donald Harry Rhodes, 98, passed away at 5:45 pm Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at VIP Manor in Wood River. 

 

He was born on April 10, 1915 in Chesterfield County, VA, the son of Levi Harry and Zora (Smith) Rhodes.  

He married Beverly Bourland on August 12, 1978 in Bethalto.  She survives.

Donald worked in maintenance at Owens Illinois Glass for 36 years until his retirement.  He attended the Bethalto Church of God.  He was a member of the Bethalto Masonic Lodge #406 and Piasa Masonic Lodge # 27 for over 60 years.  He enjoyed crocheting, making over 500 lap robes to give to missions and nursing homes, gardening and woodworking.   

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Peggy Rhodes of Medora; two daughters, Sue Rhodes of Gering, NB and Linda Rhodes of Springfield, IL; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Niki and George Nixon, Lori Rhodes, Ashley and Shane Newell, Robin and Jeff Swain, Carola Rhodes, Donna McCollum and Kim and Jim Rushton; several great grandchildren and his nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, Floy Huff Rhodes and Ioliene Linville Rhodes, a brother William “Bob” Rhodes, two step sisters, Ramie and Sissy, two half sisters, Violet and Juanita, step brother, Perry and two half brothers, Melvin and Jack.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Friday, August 23, 2013 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Funeral services will be at 11 am at the funeral home with Pastors Jeremy Robinson, Pastor Tim Campbell and Rev. Jeff Swain officiating.

Burial will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.   

Memorials may be made to the Bethalto Church of God or the American Diabetes Association.
