Dean Cooper

Dean Moore “Whitey” Cooper, 92, formerly of Rosewood Heights, passed away at 8:40 p.m. Thursday, January 1, 2015 at Alton Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 17, 1922 in Carlinville, Ill. to Nola (McCollum) Cooper. 

He married Nelda Loree Landgrebe June 19, 1943 in Columbia, Mo.  She passed away Apr. 16, 2012.

Dean was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving as 1st Lieutenant fighter pilot in the Pacific Theatre.  He retired as foreman of the decorating department after 41 years at Owens-Illinois Glass.  He loved fishing, hunting, bowling, and square dancing.  Dean was a member of the Wood River VFW Post #2859 and the Wood River Masonic Lodge. 

Survivors include a daughter, Brenda (Dennis) Mueller of Bethalto; 5 grandchildren, Scott Johnson, Chris (Amy) Johnson, Angie (Chad) Daniels, Mike Mueller, and Klaudia Katie Mueller; 8 great grandchildren, Zachary Johnson, Holly Johnson, Tyler Johnson, Devin Daniels, Jacob Johnson, Jenna Daniels Christian Johnson and Ryden McMillian; and two great-great grandchildren, Amelia Johnson and Peyton Smith.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Bette Darlene Johnson; a great granddaughter, Karlee Johnson; and two sisters, Mabel Eanes and Jerry Shoffner.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 5 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, with full military honors by Alton VFW Post #1308..

Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or the Wounded Warriors Project.
