Bette Jane Lewis, 82, died at 9:45 p.m. Thursday, December 4, 2014 at Eunice Smith Nursing Home in Alton. Born December 18, 1931 in Alton, she was the daughter of Thomas N. and Mary M. (Burrough) Allsman. Mrs. Lewis was a member of Heartland Baptist Church, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and volunteered for many years at the Crisis Food Center. She worked for Owens Illinois Glass for five years and later worked out of her home as a cosmetologist. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. On May 6, 1949 she married Eugene Lewis in Alton.
He survives. Also surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Jeana Lewis of Alton, a grandson and his wife, Mike and Natalie Lewis of Hartford, two great grandchildren, Brittani Melton (Damon) and Allison, a great-great granddaughter, Addison Melton, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Richard A. Lewis, two brothers, Delbert and Nathan Allsman and three sisters, Lucille L. Lee, Emma Johnson, and Laverna Baker.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Dr. Jim Grant will officiate.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to Heartland Baptist Church.
