Bessie E. Baker, 89, died at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton. Born January 24, 1925 in Hardin, IL she was the daughter of the late Herman and Rose (DeMoss) Beer. She was a 50 year member of the North Alton Southern Baptist Church where she worked as a secretary and served as Sunday school secretary for several years. On July 1, 1966 she married Robert Baker. He survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Bette James (Roland) of Godfrey, Lisa Pruitt (Ernie) of Cottage Hills, and Kathy Schmoeller of Godfrey, two sons, Jerry Ford (Ruth) of Godfrey, and Richard Evans (Linda) of Naperville, IL, 11 grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Howard Beer, and three sisters, Mary Craigmiles, Pauline Lampkin, and Elsie Pilkington. Funeral services will be private at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Reverend Sonny Renken will officiate. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville. Memorials may be made to the North Alton Southern Baptist Church.
