Avis Marie (Bishop) Martin, 91, passed away at 4:42 am Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Alhambra Care Center.
She was born on January 1, 1922 in Wilmington, NC, the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Fleet) Bishop.
She married James Graves Martin II on October 10, 1945 in Sikeston, MO. He preceded her in death on December 15, 2010.
Avis was a homemaker most of her life. She was a long term member of the Bethalto United Methodist Church and was active in the Women’s Auxiliary. She volunteered as a pink lady at Alton Memorial Hospital until she was 80 years old. She was involved in cub scouts and boy scouts and enjoyed doing search puzzles and square dancing with her husband.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Joan Martin of Bethalto; three grandchildren and their spouses, Benjamin and Joann Martin of Chesterfield, MO, Whitney and Clay Cummins of Bethalto and Brianna Martin of Brentwood, MO; a sister, Joan Rolwing of Charleston, MO and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, James G. Martin III and a sister, Mary Lasater.
Visitation will be from 9:30 until services at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 28, 2013 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be given to the Bethalto Methodist Church Building Fund.
