Anthony "Tony" Carey, 67, died at 10:40 a.m., Friday, January 1, 2016 at his residence after a short battle with lung cancer.He was born in St. Josephs Hospital in Alton on Oct. 4, 1948, and was one of three sons born to Vincent Girard & Florence Mae (Jakulski) Carey.He graduated with the Class of 1966 from Jersey Community High School, and attended Quincy University before being drafted with the U.S. Army serving in Germany during the Vietnam War.Tony was a devoted family man, a loving husband and father, as well as active grandpa.  He had a passion for baseball as a player, fan and coach, and enjoyed many years coaching with the Grafton Khoury League and most recently with the 14U Calhoun Crush traveling baseball team.  An avid outdoorsman, Tony enjoyed waterfowl hunting, a passion and tradition he was able to share with his youngest son, Mark, and oldest grandson, A.J.Tony was a life long resident of Grafton, and was very community oriented.  He served as the City Clerk for Grafton for over 20 years, and was currently serving on the Jersey County Board.  On Jan. 1, 2015 he retired from Total Metal Recycling after spending his entire career with them as a metal broker.He married the love of his life, Patricia Hogan on April 17, 1971 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Granite City, and they were just shy three days of celebrating their 44th wedding anniversary before her death on April 14, 2015.Surviving are his three children & their spouses, Matthew "Matt" & Kerry Carey of New Lenox, IL., Mark & Martha Carey of Grafton, and Angela "Angie" & Kyle Hansen of Jerseyville; his six grandchildren, Anthony Joseph "A.J." and Emily Carey of Grafton, Benjamin & Katherine Carey of New Lenox, and Ethan and Jonathan Drew "J.D." Hansen of Jerseyville; a brother & sister in law,  Terry Joseph & Sara Carey of Grafton; a sister in law, Karen Carey Schobernd of Jerseyville; an aunt, Judy Draper of Alton; a cousin and her husband, Trudy (Carey) and Virgil Jennings of Granite City; a sister in law and brother in law, Betty & Handy Truitt of Chillicothe; brothers in law, Raymond Michael Hogan of Brighton, and Tom Hogan of Granite City; and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends.In addition to his wife, Patty, he was preceded in death by his father, Vincent Carey; his mother, Florence Carey Coffman; a brother, Michael Carey Sr.; his paternal grandparents, Benjamin & Esther Carey; his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Dinker; his father in law & mother in law, Raymond Michael & Angela Hogan Sr.; and a sister in law, Lu Hogan.Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grafton, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating.Burial will be in the Scenic Hill Cemetery with the Grafton American Legion Post 648 conducting military graveside rites.Memorials may be given to the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grafton.
