Donna M. (Niehaus) Knippel, B.S., R.N., 85, passed away Sunday, November 23, 2014 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born Oct. 15, 1929 in Superior, Neb., she was the daughter of Clarence William and Christiana Marie (Albertsen) Niehaus.
She attended high school in Lincoln, Neb. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln and obtainer her nursing education from Northwestern-Abbot Hospital in Minneapolis, Minn. She became a registered nurse upon completion of her nursing education.
As a registered nurse, she specialized in pediatric nursing and nursing education. Until her retirement in 1990, she was on the nursing staff of hospitals in Oklahoma, Illinois, and Missouri. She was a nurse educator at DePaul Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, Wood River Township Hospital, and Truman Restorative Center in St. Louis.
In 1954, she married Rev. Dr. Charles T. Knippel in Lincoln, Neb. She was active as a pastor’s wife in the Lutheran congregations served by her husband in Oklahoma, Illinois, and Missouri.
She is survived by her husband Charles; a son, Charles A. Knippel and daughter, Anne Marie (Jerry) Glassmeyer, all of East Alton; a grandson Gregory J. Bamert, Jr. and his fiancée Kacie Fournie; and a brother, Daniel W. Niehaus of Lodi, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Donald L. Niehaus.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28 at Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton, and will continue Saturday, Nov. 29 at Hope Lutheran Church in Granite City from 9:30 a.m. until services begin at 10 a.m. The Rev. Dr. David Fielding will officiate.
Burial will be at Woodland Hill Cemetery, East Alton.
Memorials may be made to Hope Lutheran Church in Granite City or Concordia Seminary in St. Louis.
