James E. Gutmann, 76, passed away at 4:30 am, Friday, November 14, 2014 at Blu-Fountain Manor in Godfrey.
He was born in Springfield, IL on June 23, 1938, the third child of the late Lee and Florence Gutmann.
He came to Alton in 1962, where he and Georgiana raised three children. He worked 36 years at Alton Box Board and Jefferson-Smurfit. Then for seven years he owned and helped his present wife with their dry cleaners in East Alton.
James and his present wife, Lois C. Plopper, were married on September 14, 1990.
He leaves behind his three children: Dr. James (Maria) Gutmann Jr. of Evansville, IN, Daniel (Cindy) Gutmann of Alton, and Kathleen Uferf of Bunker Hill. He also leaves eight grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three step children and their spouses, five step grandchildren, and seven step great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, three sisters: Marilou (Tony) Montalbano of Ormond Beach FL, Ann (Gerald) Lucht of Springfield, Nancy Gutmann and her companion Richard Williams of Edinburg, two brothers: John (Gladys) Gutmann of Lake Lady, FL, and Donald (Christy) Gutmann of Olympia, WA.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerome and Charles Gutmann and one sister: Carol Nolker, all of Springfield, IL.
A memorial visitation will be held at 9:30 am until time of service at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.
