Bruce Bort

Bruce C. Bort, 73, passed away at 2:17 pm Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Ralais Bonne Eau Hospice House in Edwardsville, IL. 

He was born on November 30, 1940 in Bunker Hill, the son of the late Fred S. & Edith H. (Kirkwood) Bort.

He married Irene C. (Campbell) on October 20, 1962 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bunker Hill.  She survives.

Bruce served his country in the U.S. Army from 1959 to 1962.  He then came back home and opened his business Bruce’s Barber Shop in Bethalto from 1962 to 1969, after leaving the barber shop he started work for the Alton & Southern R R out of E. St. Louis as a train switchman and engineer for 32 years until 2001 when he retired.  After retirement he barbered part time with his brother Fred.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto and was a volunteer Bethalto fireman.  He loved to fishing with Bill and Kyle.

In addition to his wife of 52 years, he is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara Bort of Bethalto and Jaime & Andrew Kraut of Edwardsville; a daughter-in-law, Mary Bort of Carlinville; five grandchildren, Kasie, Kyle, Griffin, Ashlyn and Madalyn; one sister and brother-in-law, Helena & Rev. Walter DeMoss of Oswego, IL and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Fred & Sylvia Bort of Prairietown and his twin Jerry & Joyce Bort of Rosewood Heights.

   

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Bruce Christopher Bort and son Bill Bort.

Visitation will be from 9 until time of funeral service at 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Hofferber and Vicar Adam Ellsworth officiating.

Burial will be at Bunker Hill City Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to “Pedal for the Cause” in Jaime Kraut’s name, benefiting the Siteman Cancer Center & St. Louis Children’s Hospital in which his daughter will be riding in and or Zion Lutheran Church.

Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto will be in charge of arrangements.
