John M. 'Jack' Delaney, Sr

John M. 'Jack' Delaney, Sr., 80, passed away 7:46 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Willow Creek Rehab and Nursing in Belleville.Born in Wood River on August 1, 1933, he was the son of James and Florence (Paul) Delaney.A U.S. Army veteran, he had been active with the Wood River Jaycees and had been a longtime member of the chior at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Wood River (now Holy Angels Parish).Jack graduated from St. Louis University and served as an office manager for several companies including, Economy Boat and National Marine.On July 2, 1955 in East Alton, he married the former M. Joan Galloway.  She died in 1996.Surviving are a son, John M. Delaney, Jr. of Jerseyville; a daughter, Kathleen (Peter) Herbig of St. Louis; six grandchildren, Margaret (Lance) Dillinger, Victoria (Mike) Sutton, John M. Delaney, III, Andrew, Will and Sam Herbig; three great grandchildren, Kole and Callie Sutton, Chloe Dillinger; and a brother, Robert Delaney of Carterville, and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two brothers, Jim and Michael Delaney.In accordance with his wishes, his body was cremated.A Mass will be said in his honor at a later date.Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.Marks Mortuary in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
