Nelson Jones

Nelson E. Jones, 91, passed away at 7:35 a.m. Thursday, May1, 2014 at his residence.Born on February 8, 1923 in Marion, OH, he was the son of Nelson and Gladys Irene (Rasey) Jones.A WWII navy veteran, he was a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 1299.  He had worked for the Department of Defence as a civilian, WB-10 mechanic for 25 years before retiring.  After retiring, he drove 2 years for Foxes Grove Retirement Community in Wood River and had been a purchaser at Wood River Hospital for 15 years.On July 21, 1970 in Alton, he married Ludmilla "Luda" Banchikoff.  She survives.Surviving also are four sons Ricky (Enid) Joones of Kissimmee, FL, Nelson (Tina) Jones of South Roxana, Foster (Kimberly) Oglesby of Staunton, Britton (Chris) Oglesby of Godfrey; five daughters, Judy (Norman) Schoettle of Edwardsville, Audrey (John) South Springfield, Tamara (Robert) Leiner of Jerseyville, Theresa (Dan) Wood of South Roxana, Mila Jarke of Edwardsville; 17 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Emil, Kenneth and Elwin Jones; and two sisters, Erma McCartle and Florence Davis.Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Monday, May 5 at Marks Mortuary in Wood River.Pastor Kimberly Allen will officiate.Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.Memorials may be made to the 1st United Methodist Church in Wood River, Community Christian Church in O'Fallon or St. Louis Childrens Hospital Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation.
