Florian John “Sonny” Tyburski, 90, of Wood River, IL, died at 9:45 a.m. Sun. Apr. 27, 2014 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
He was born July 7, 1923 in Toledo, OH to the late John & Martha Tyburski.
He married Catherine Guarino Nov. 22, 1947 in Wood River at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and she preceded him in death on March 27, 2012.
He was employed with Helmkamp Construction & Trucking Co. and worked out of Wood River Labor Local #338. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII for two years as a cook.
He is survived by: 2 daughters, Cynthia & Doug DePew and Becky & Wayne Thien, both of Wood River; four grandchildren, Krista Thien & George Jiminez, West & Danielle Thien, Ryan & Beth DePew and Dane & Nikki DePew, eight great-grandchildren, Gavin DePew, Gage DePew, Tristan DePew, Thomas DePew, McKenzie DePew, Elijah DePew, Blake and Audrey Thien; one great-great granddaughter, Kamber Smith; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Sam & Sally Guarino.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by: a grandson, Dustin DePew, 2 sisters and brothers-in-law, Virginia &Frank Kudzel and Florence & Doug Curran.
Florian was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great grandfather, brother, son, brother-in-law, uncle, cousin and friend.
He enjoyed life to the fullest, especially dancing, traveling with his wife, gardening, camping, magic acts, playing cards and carving wooden canes.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, Apr. 29 at Paynic Home for Funerals. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father James Flach at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 30 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River.
Burial will follow at Woodland Hill Cemetery in East Alton, with military honors by Alton VFW Post #1308.
Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Assoc. or the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
