Sister Aycock

Sister Joan Marie Aycock died peacefully at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton, Illinois, on January 20, 2014.  The daughter of Fernand Joseph Aycock, Sr. and Palmyere Lasseigne Aycock, she was born on January 29, 1925, in Puerto Castillo, Honduras.  She was preceded in death by one brother, Fernand Joseph Aycock, Jr., and two sisters:  Ida Clotilde Aycock (Sister Damian Aycock, O.S.U.), and Teresa Madere.  She is survived by devoted nieces and nephews.

Sister Joan Marie received her elementary education at Ursuline Academy in New Orleans and St. Peter’s Parochial School.  Graduating from Ursuline Academy in New Orleans in 1942, she entered the Ursuline Sisters the following summer and made her vows in January of 1945. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at the College of New Rochelle in New York, and a Masters Degree in Education at Loyola University in New Orleans.  A superb elementary school teacher, she enjoyed assignments in New Orleans, Louisiana; Dallas and Galveston, Texas; and Jennings, Missouri. She returned to New Orleans in 1989 to take over the work of the community archives and retired to Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in the fall of 2008.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, January, 28, 2014 at 10:00 am with visitation beginning at 9:00 am.  Reverend Tom Horan, OMI will preside.  Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey, Illinois.

Memorials may be made to the Ursuline Infirmary, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois, 62002.
