Max Joseph Nowak, 91, passed away peacefully at 6:15 p.m., Friday, December 6, 2013 at the Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation.
He was born in Brenham, Texas on January 14, 1922 the youngest of five children born to the late Max & Theresa (Nowicki) Nowak.
He graduated from Jersey Township High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he was employed at International Shoe Factory, and retired from Mc-Donnell Douglas Corporation in 1984 after 27 years of service.
He married the former Mary Margaret Heitzig on September 3, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fieldon, and they shared more than 65 years together before her passing on January 25, 2013.
Surviving are his four children & their spouses, Judy & Sam Tapson of Elkhorn, Wi., Gary & Christi Nowak of Edwardsville, Marilyn & Ron Swearingin of Jerseyville, and David & Jill Nowak of Chesterfield, Mo.; seven grandchildren & their spouses, Sean & Dawn Tapson of St. Charles, Il., Michael Tapson of Chicago, Erica & Adam Proctor of Edwardsville, Jessica & Randy Roentz of Jerseyville, Ryan & Jane Swearingin and Lauren Swearingin all of Edwardsville, and Marritt Nowak of Chesterfield, MO.; five great grandchildren, Carly & Morgan Tapson, Mia Tapson, Ella & Josie Proctor, and another Swearingin great granddaughter on the way; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters & brothers in law, Janie & Julius Weaver, Clara & Presley Schoeneman, Victoria & Ike Pribilski, and Martha & Curtis Thomas.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 10:45 a.m., Wednesday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m., Wednesday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.
Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Fieldon.
Max was proud to have served as a Homecoming Spirit at Jersey Comunity High School, and memorial contributions in his honor can be mad to the JCHS Homecoming Spirit Fund to benefit Panther athletics.
