Margaret Reid Armes Middlecoff, 87, passed away quietly, surrounded by family and friends, on Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Eunice C. Smith Home in Alton. She was born September 9, 1925 in Masonville, KY the daughter of the late William “Roy” and Floreine (Martin) Armes. She retired from the Shell Oil Wood River Refinery in 1990 after 47 years of loyal service. After her retirement, she worked tirelessly at the Wood River Refinery History Museum, and enjoyed her summer cottage at Chautauqua, volunteering in numerous organizations related to Chautauqua and Elsah. On July 25, 1952 in Alton she married Robert L. Middlecoff who preceded her in death on September 26, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her loving niece, Lana Zakrzewski of Roxana, IL.

She is survived by two sisters: Louise Gant of LaPlace, LA and Helen Opel (Mervin) of Jeffersonville, IN; nieces and nephews: Roger Gant (Annick) of Herndon, VA, Stephen Gant of Chapel Hill, NC, Susan Rheney (Clarke) of Greensboro, GA and Harry Opel (Karen) of Newport News, VA: and five great nieces and nephews: Alan, Alexandra, William, Victoria and Sophia Gant.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where services will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday.

Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.

Memorials may be made to the Godfrey Baptist Church or the Wood River Refinery History Museum.
