Elden Leo Schmidt, 91, died at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton. He was born August 31, 1921 in Alton, the son of the late Leo J. and Florence Marie (Lengacher) Schmidt. He was a member of Saint Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey and a graduate of Marquette Catholic High School. He attended the University of Illinois and the American Academy of Art in Chicago. Elden was stationed at Pearl Harbor with the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII and is a past member of Alton VFW Post 1308. He retired in 1990 as a manager of Graphic Design with Jefferson Smurfit, formerly Alton Box Board. On July 3, 1948 at in Alton he married Frances (Huebener) and she preceded him in death on March 5, 2009. He is survived by two sons; David Schmidt and his wife Mary of St. Charles, MO and Mark Schmidt and his wife Lisa of Charlotte, NC, three grandchildren; Michael, Cole and Lauren Schmidt, and one sister; Marcella Clasby (Jim) of Godfrey. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by three brothers; Marvin, Ralph and Gerald Schmidt. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. Until time of Memorial Mass at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013 at Saint Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey with Father Steve Pohlman officiating. Burial will be at Brighton Cemetery with full military honors. Memorials may be made to Marquette Catholic High School.
