Joan Rose Paddock, 89 passed away at 5:54 am, Saturday August 10, 2013 in her daughter’s home, surrounded by her family and under the care of St. Anthony’s Hospice.

Daughter of the late Henry and Exie (Pendleton) Jun, Joan was born on October 2, 1923 in St. Louis, Missouri. When Joan was 9 months old her mother died, and she was raised by her grandparents, the late John and Rose (Girsch) Jun of Alton.

She married Warren “Brownie” Paddock on February 5, 1946 in Alton. He preceded her in death on June 9, 1984.

Joan was a graduate of St. Mary’s School, Marquette Catholic High School, and the Ursuline Business College, all in Alton. She worked for Noll Insurance Agency after her marriage until the birth of her children. In 1963 Joan became the kindergarten teacher at St. Mary’s Grade School where she taught for 25 years, many of which took place in the “Little Red School House.” She retired in 1988.

After her retirement Joan volunteered for Caravan and St. Anthony’s auxiliary, working in the gift shop. She then worked for seven years at Staten-Burke-Fine Funeral Home in Alton as a greeter.

Joan was very much a part of her children’s, grandchildren’s, and great-grandchildren’s lives, supporting them in all their activities, and was known to many of their friends simply as “Grandma Joanie”. She had a great love for St. Mary’s Church, Marquette Catholic High School, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and her grand-dogs.

Joan is survived by her daughters and son-in-law, Martha Lewis and Barbara and Larry McCoy of Alton; four grandchildren, Marcy Lewis of Alton, Patrick and Chrissy (Visser) Lewis of Rosewood Heights, Brian T. Lewis of Washington, IL, and Mandy Lewis and her fiancé Josh Cook of Alton; and four great-grandchildren, Gabrielle, AJ, Maria, and John-Paul Lewis of Rosewood Heights.

In addition to her husband and parents, Joan was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Spencer Lewis.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 3 to 7 pm on Friday, August 16, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.
