William Sweetman

William “Bill” Joseph Sweetman, 80, passed away at 11:35 pm, on Friday, August 9, 2013 at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton.

He was born on May 30, 1933 in Hamburg, IL the son of the late Alfred and Agnes (Brangenburg) Sweetman.

William married Sue (Kraut) on April 12, 1958 at the Hardin Presbyterian Church in Hardin, IL, she survives.

Bill served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War; he was employed as a tugboat deck hand at the Peabody Coal Company and later worked as a coal dock operator for them. He was also employed by the Illinois
Department of Natural Resources at Pere Marquette State Park. He was a member of the 12th St. Presbyterian Church in Alton, a member of the American Legion in Hardin, IL and enjoyed camping.  He was also very active in the Scouts of America and his greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife Sue; a daughter Michelle and her spouse Tom Klasner; two sons David and his spouse Susan Sweetman of Godfrey and Brad and his spouse Jaci Sweetman of Alton, and eight grandchildren; Corporal Jordan Sweetman of the United
States Marine Corp, Godfrey, Bailey Sweetman of Godfrey, Jake and his spouse Erin Sweetman of Edwardsville, Tanner and his spouse Jaclene Sweetman of Edwardsville, Laci Sweetman of Alton, Jonah Bostick, Noah Bostick and Ryan Klasner of  Jerseyville; brother James “Jim” and his spouse Dru Sweetman of Diamond Head MS, and several loving nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 3 to 8 pm, Monday, August 12, 2013  at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey.

Funeral service will be at 10 am on Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at the Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey with the Rev Dave Burger officiating.

Burial will follow at the Upper Alton Cemetery with military rites will be conducted by Alton VFW Post 1308.

The Family would like to thank Dr. John Hoelscher, the TCU Unit at Alton Memorial Hospital, and BJC Hospice.
