Robert Burton

Robert A. Burton, of Fosterburg, IL, died at 4:05 a.m. Fri. July 19, 2013 at VIP Manor in Wood River, IL.

He was born Jan. 19, 1920 in Diehlstadt, MO to the late Harry Lee & Mary Laura (Hightower) Burton.

On Sept. 22, 1997, he and Melba M. (Day) Irvin were married in Bunker Hill, IL.  She survives in Fosterburg.

Robert was a WWII U.S. Army veteran serving from 1941 to 1945 in the 7th Cavalry in the Pacific Theater.  He was a farmer and worked at Shell Oil Refinery as a welder and pipefitter retiring in 1982 after 28 years of service.  He was an all-around great and caring man and good neighbor.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: a son, Ronnie Burton of Granite City, IL, step-sons, Gilbert K. Young of Fosterburg and Harold L. Irvin Jr. of Bunker Hill, step-daughters, Valeria E. Hudson of Creal Springs, IL and Jean Beckwith of Bethalto, IL, 3 grandchildren, 12 step-granchildren, 17 step-great-grandchildren and a special niece and nephew, Charlotte & Harold Starr.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by: a son, Rodney A. Burton, brothers, Edward Lee Burton, Ralph Leslie Burton and Lawrence Lindell Burton and sisters, Bessie Nitt and Catholine Ray.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sun. July 21, 2013 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where services will be at 1:00 p.m. Mon. July 22, 2013 with Rev. Kimberly Allen officiating.  Burial will follow at Wood burn Cemetery with military honors by VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
