Lonnie Aldon Smith, 90, passed away at 10:35 pm on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at his residence under the care of St. Anthony’s Hospice.
He was born July 29, 1922 in Marshall County, Kentucky, the son of Lonnie and Winnie Smith.
He married Ollie Fern Higgins on December 6, 1941 in St. Louis, MO. She survives.
Lonnie was a maintenance welder at Laclede Steel Company. He attended the Bethalto United Methodist Church and was a member of the Wood River Moose Lodge. He enjoyed bowling and had a beautiful rose garden of 400 rose bushes.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Pat Holbert of Wood River; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Barbara Smith of Chatham, IL; three grandchildren and their spouses, Debbie and Ken Shawgo of Chatham, IL, Dawn Hubbard of Wood River and Kim and Matt Burlison of Bloomington, IL; one great granddaughter, Sophia Ann Shawgo; two sisters, Floetta Jarvis and Edna Rainy both of Greenville and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ray Smith, J.T. Smith and Earl Smith, two sisters, Erma Frankford and Zola Johnson and a grandson, Timothy Smith.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Thursday, May 2, 2013 at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Funeral services will be at 10 am on Friday, May 3, 2013 at the funeral home with Pastor Mike Rayson officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military rites.
