Salvatore Compagno

Salvatore L. "Sam" Compagno, 99, passed away at 7:35pm on Saturday, April 20, 2013, at his residence.  He was born on November 15, 1913, in Alton, Illinois the son of the late Ross and Nancy (Rao) Compagno.  He married the former Josephine E. Tiona on August 28th, 1941, and she preceded him in death on June 19, 2004.  Survivors include two grandchildren: Christine Coles and her husband: Bob of South Roxana, Christopher Compagno of Alton, three great grandchildren: Adam Coles, Dawson Coles, and Addison Coles, a sister: Josephine Ufert of Wood River, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and other extended family. 

He was formerly employed as a crane operator at Olin Corp.  He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II where he was map maker.  He was a member of the American Legion Post #126 in Alton.  Known as "Greeps" to his family and friends, he was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and an University of Illinois fan.  He loved reading the Alton Telegraph every day.  He loved going to Sam's Club, he enjoyed shopping, and visits to the Sportman's Barber Shop and Han's Barber Shop.  He loved family gatherings and especially enjoyed spending time with his great grandchildren.  Following the death of his wife, he went to live with granddaughter Chris and her husband Bob and they were his caregivers. 

 

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by a son: Christopher S. Compagno, four sisters: Bessie Little, Anne Elledge, Rose Foster, Elizabeth Compagno, two brothers: John Compagno and "Little" Johnnie Compagno. 

In celebration on his life, visitation will be from 11am until time of funeral services at 1pm on Friday, April 26, 2013, at Pitchford Funeral Home in Wood River.  Father James Flach will officiate.  Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Alton with full military honors by the Ritual Team of VFW Post 1308. 

Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Post #126 in Alton. 

The family would like to thank the staff at Alton Memorial Hospital and St. Clare's Hospital for their care and kindness.
