Kenneth Whisler

Kenneth A Whisler, age 97, died Wednesday, September 19, 2012, at Alton Memorial Hospital with family at his side.  Born January 16, 1915, in rural Ava, Illinois, he was the son of the late Lewis Almer and Cynthia Elizabeth (Henson) Whisler of Ava, Illinois.

 

On October 11, 1941 he and Dorothy E. Anghouse were married in Richmond Heights, Missouri. She survives.

Kenneth graduated from Ava Community High School in 1932. He worked with his father on the farm and taught in rural schools near Ava. After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Illinois in 1941, Kenneth enlisted in the US Army for four years. Following basic training, he rose in grade to Captain and served during WWII in all five European Campaigns including the Battle of The Bulge.  He taught in Sparta and Alton, Illinois as a High School teacher.  He worked 25 years for Shell Oil Company Research before retiring in 1976.  After retiring Kenneth worked at JC Penney in Alton for several years. He lived in Alton with his wife Dorothy. 

He was a member of College Avenue Presbyterian Church and served as Deacon and Elder and worked with young people in the Sunday School.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law David and Pam Whisler of Godfrey; two grandsons and spouses, James L. and Amy Whisler of Webster Groves, Missouri, Matthew D. and Kristin Whisler of Chicago, Illinois along with their twin daughters, Kiley & Quinn Whisler of Chicago and Anna James Whisler of Webster Groves, Missouri.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Larry Kenneth Whisler who died in infancy; two brothers, Frank and Arthur Whisler and three sisters, Grace Garver, Frieda Wright and Irma Schilling.

Visitation will be from 9 am until time of service at 10:30 am Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey with Pastor Ken Morgan officiating. Military Rites will follow the visitation at the funeral home with the Alton VFW Post 1308.

Burial will be at a later date at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, IL.

Memorials may be made to College Avenue Presbyterian Church in Alton.
