James Simpson

James A. Simpson, age 87, passed away at 2:30 am May 5, 2012 at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL.

He was born on November 5, 1924 in East Alton, IL the son of the late James Francis & Lulu (Barbeau) Simpson.

James graduated from Marquette High School class of 1942.  He then entered the United States Navy and served his country during WWII as a signalman 1st Class, with the 4th Marines Division, receiving the Presidential Citation.  James spent many years in the construction business.  He was a member of St. Matthews Catholic Church in Alton for over 50 years.  He was one of the original members to help construct and build the church and was the manager of the St. Matthews Men’s Softball team for 12 years.  He was also a member of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Alton VFW Post 1308, Alton American Legion Post 126, and a past member of the Alton Knights of Columbus #460.  He enjoyed fishing, watching and playing baseball, especially his favorite team the Chicago Cubs and a large supporter of the local athletics. James loved spending time with his family and friends and will be sadly missed.

James married Allene “Pee Wee” M. (Tiemann) Simpson on September 27, 1947 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton. They celebrated 62 years of marriage.  She passed away March 2, 2008.

Surviving are six children and their spouses, Judith A. & Ted Northway of Wood River, Susan J. Nolan of Wood River, Thomas M. Simpson of Huntsville, AL, James W. Simpson of Wood River, Patrick A. & Patricia Simpson of Piasa, IL and Rosemary K. & Jeffrey Young of Carrollton; fourteen grandchildren; fifthteen great grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law, Melvin & Louise Simpson of Edwardsville and one sister and brother-in-law, Ellen & Gene Ridenhower of Alton.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by his sister, Rita Morrison.

Visitation will be Monday May 7, 2012 from 4 to 8 pm at Elias Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton with Father Delix Michel S.S.L. officiating.

Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery with military rites being preformed by the Alton VFW Post 1308.

Memorials may be directed to American Diabetes Association and or the Alton High School Athletic Association.
