James Robert Tolle, 84, passed at 11:25 p.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Robings Manor in Brighton with his family by his side.
Born March 13, 1931 in Godfrey, he was the son of the late George and Bessie (Watson) Tolle. He married Ann Hughes, his loving wife of 61 years, on July 10, 1954. She survives.
James was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran honorably discharged in March of 1954. He was employed as a machinist at Owens Illinois for 43 years before retiring in 1994. His hobbies included maintaining numerous rental properties, gardening, yard work, tinkering with and refurbishing old tractors. He and his wife loved to dance and were regulars at the Alton VFW Post 1308, where he was a lifetime member. He loved family gatherings at his home on 4th of July and Christmas holidays.
He is survived by three sons, a daughter and their spouses, James and Linda of Grafton, Jeff and Linda of Brighton, Jerry and Trish of Godfrey, Janice and Tim Fee of Bethalto, 8 grandchildren, Jackie Pollard (Larry) of Alton, Justin Tolle (Courtney) of Champaign, James Tolle of Alton, Jerald Tolle of Godfrey, Jenna Tolle of Godfrey, Tregg Fee of Bethalto, Makenzi Fee of Bethalto, and Lindsey Coughlin (Ryan) of Bethalto, three great grandchildren, Jayda, Grace, and Jack, and two sisters, Helen Hickerson of Alton and Shirley Warner (Gene) of Godfrey. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother George Tolle and five sisters, Clara Beard, Mina Trask, Mary Pohlman, Alma DeSherlia and Fern Depper.
Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 11, 2016. Reverend Julie Kies will officiate. Burial will be at Godfrey Cemetery with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
