Rory Michael Rathgeb, 60, died at 10:40 a.m. Wednesday, September 30, 2015 in Alton. Born July 27, 1955 in Champaign, he was the son of Glennon M. and Eileen R. (Krieder) Rathgeb. Sergeant Rathgeb started his career as a police officer in 1987 at the Carlinville Police Department. Then, he was a patrolman and later Chief of Police with the Benld, IL Police Department and had served as the Police Chief of National City, IL. He had been with the Alton Police Department since 1996. He was assigned to the Patrol Division, the Special Community Area Target Team (SCATT) Unit, the Investigations Division, the Narcotics Unit and the FBI Safe Street Task Force throughout his tenure with the Alton Police Department. He was named Alton Police Department’s Officer of the Month twice for outstanding work in his field and received numerous letters of appreciation, commendation, and recognition from the Alton Police Department, Alton community members and the United States Department of Justice. In addition to his work with the police department he was an instructor at the Olin handgun range and he loved to trout fish. On December 9, 1995 he married the former Theresa Louise Dugan in Carlinville, IL. She survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Jessica Lynne Rathgeb, Morgan Christine Rathgeb, Amanda Renee Rathgeb all of Carlinville and Gwendolyn England Murray of St. Louis, MO, one son, James Robert England of Carlinville, four grandchildren, Harrison Michael Nepute, Rowan Christine Nepute, Eva Renee Johnson, and Rihanna Renee Barton all of Carlinville. Also surviving is a sister Renee Michelle Waggoner (Doug) of Murfreesboro, TN and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 3, 2015 at the Bridge Church in Alton. Reverend Steven Helfrich will officiate. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the St. Louis Area BackStoppers. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
