Stephen Maxwell Cowan, 56, died at 5:00 a.m. Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Alton Memorial Hospital. Born July 25, 1959 in Oxford, England, he was the son of Margaret (Hughes) Cowan of Oxford, England and the late Dr. William Maxwell Cowan. Mr. Cowan was a self-employed photographer. He was a member of the NRA and loved the outdoors. He was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also collected stamps and coins. Stephen had a great many friends. Many will remember his annual Fourth of July firework display. On May 9, 2008 he married the former Sue Anne Ryan in Edwardsville. She survives. In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by two step-sons, Gwaine McGibany of Alton, and Joseph McGibany (Kathryn Galyon) of Alton, one grandson, Joseph McGibany, a brother, David Maxwell Cowan of Cardiff, CA, a sister, Ruth Figgest (Robert) of Seaford, England, and two nephews, Stephen Christopher Eadon-Rayner and Lt. David William Eadon-Rayner also of England. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until time of funeral service at 7:00 p.m. Friday, August 28, 2015 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.
