Hilda Day

Jerseyville |

Hilda G. (Burch) Day, 94, went to be with the Lord at 7:38 a.m, Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Jerseyville.

Hilda was born on April 30, 1921 in Jersey County to the late George D. and Ethel A. (Cummings) Burch.

She grew up in the Alton area where she was raised by her grandparents, T.J. and Hattie Cummings.

Hilda moved to Jersey County with her grandparents in 1939 and received her high school diploma from Jersey Township High School.

She married Melvin Day on July 27, 1940 in a ceremony performed by Rev. Robert Hiligas at the Alton Gospel Tabernacle and together they shared 50 years of marriage before his death on December 15, 1990.

She went on to graduate from Alton Central Beauty College in 1958 and shortly after opened her own business in Jerseyville, “Heidi’s Beauty Shop”, which she ran from 1959 to 1969 when she closed her beauty shop to become an Administrator at Garnet’s Chateau Nursing Home in Jerseyville where she retired in 1979.

After her retirement, she was able to make lasting memories with her husband and many friends, camping and traveling together.

Having no children of her own, Hilda loved and cherished her nieces and nephews as well as those of her friends. She was always eager to lend a helping hand and her family and church were her life. She was a charter member of the First Assembly of God Church in Jerseyville where she taught Sunday School, youth groups and participated in mission work.

She loved her many friends and her family, and was “Aunt Hilda” to all where knew her.

Surviving are a very special niece and her husband, Joann (Burch) and Bill Beiermann of Jerseyville; her nephews and their spouses, Thomas & Shirley Burch of St. John, AZ and Terry & Jody Sarginson of Jerseyville; along with many great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and her grandparents, she was preceded in death by her husband,  Melvin Day; two brothers, Thomas Burch, who died in World War II, and Delbert Burch of Plainview; and a half brother, Leonard Burch of Carrollton.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.

Funeral Services will take place at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2015 at the First Assembly of God Church in Jerseyville with burial alongside her husband at the Oak Grove Cemetery, also in Jerseyville.
