Floyd Markel

Floyd Art Markel, age 89, died May 27, 2015.

Born December 14, 1925 in Alton he was the son of Ira and Cecil (Gates) Markel. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946 in the Admiralty Island the Philippines and Australia. He was a former member of the VFW Post 1308, the Alton Eagles Foe No. 254, the Madison County Genealogical Society, and the Golden Emblem at Owens Illinois. He worked for Owens Illinois from June 21, 1943 until his retirement on February 28, 1988. On January 28, 1944 he married Morabell Moody. She preceded him in death on December 4, 1997.  He then married Dora Belle Mikoff on July 16, 2005 in Alton. She preceded him in death on March 27, 2008. 

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Marie and Ron Daube of Cannon Beach, Oregon; Vicky and Jim Swinney of Prescott, Arizona; and Carla and Al Pranaitis of Godfrey, Illinois; eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, three sisters, Clara Duncan (Jerry) of Alton; Dot Minks of Alton; and Ginny Abbott (Dink) of Alton, and a sister-in-law, Betsy Markel of Godfrey. He was also blessed with Dora’s children who survive, Roscoe and Rosie Mikoff of Alton; Nick and Barb Mikoff of Brighton; Karen and Terry Dorris of Godfrey; and Sue and Garry Weaver of Godfrey. Also surviving are Dora’s seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Gene, Homer and Jack Markel, and a sister, Marie Markel. Art’s family and friends were blessed with his optimism, happiness, and sheer joy of life. He started every day with a happy song, and was always eager to share the words “I’ve had a good life.”

Visitation will be Saturday, May 30, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral services at 12:00 Noon at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with Pastor Sam Henning to officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with full Military honors from Alton VFW Post 1308. Memorials may be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association.
