The drought is taking its toll on Illinois’ fish population, but there is something you can do to mitigate the damage. If you live along an Illinois lake, river, pond or stream, keep lawn care products from getting in the water.

Illinois Department of Natural Resources spokesman Chris McCloud says fish are stressed enough due to low water levels and lower levels of oxygen due to the heat. Adding pollutants to the water, even by accident, will make it worse. The DNR is asking people to avoid using those lawn care products. But if you have to, take the time to walk your property to make sure there isn’t anything in water that shouldn’t be.
