A 20-year old program is making its way to Alton again for the Christmas season. A local chapter of Wreaths Across America was set up in recent years to decorate the graves of those buried at the Alton National Cemetery on Pearl Street, and the public is invited to attend the ceremony that will be held tomorrow morning at 11:00. It lasts about a half-hour, and is held at the same time at each participating cemetery around the nation.
Alton resident Margaret Hopkins began the local chapter about six years ago, and says local scouts will work along side local veterans in laying the wreaths on more than 500 headstones.
The live 20-inch live balsam wreaths will remain up for about a month. Donations can be made to Alton Wreaths Across America at P.O. Box 181 Alton, IL, 62002. For more information, contact Hopkins at 474-2005.
