An 20-year old program is making its way to Alton again for the Christmas season. A local chapter of Wreaths Across America was set up a few years ago to decorate the graves of those buried at the Alton National Cemetery on Pearl Street, and the public is invited to attend the ceremony that will be held on Saturday, December 10.
Alton resident Margaret Hopkins began the local chapter about five years ago, and says local scouts will work along side local veterans in laying the wreaths on more than 500 headstones.
The live 20-inch wreaths will remain up for about a month. Donations can still be made to Alton Wreaths Across America at P.O. Box 181 Alton, IL, 62002. For more information, contact Hopkins at 474-2005.
