More than 500 graves will be decorated next month at the Alton National Cemetery on Pearl Street as part of the Wreaths Across America program.  For about two decades, the decorations have been placed at the Arlington National Cemetery and others across the country and this will be the sixth year for decorations in Alton.

Alton resident Margaret Hopkins is organizing the effort again and says it was after watching a TV news story on the group that she decided to get involved:

Students from Gilson Brown School will assist in laying the wreaths this year.  The ceremony itself is scheduled for 11am Saturday December 15, and should last about a half hour at Alton National Cemetery.  Donations can be made to help offset the costs of the wreaths which is $5,400.  A suggested $10 donation can be mailed to Alton Wreaths Across America at P.O. Box 181 Alton, IL, 62002.
