The City of Wood River will soon have a memorial to honor those from the city who made the ultimate sacrafice while seving their country. A veterans memorial is in the planning stage, after members of the Wood River Heritage Council decided to do something about the fact that there was nothing in their museum to recognize just those who were from Wood River.
Nearly 70 residents died while serving their country, going back to the Civil War, but this memorial will only honor those going back to 1908, the year the city was incorporated.
Mayor Fred Ufert says there will be flags that will be flown for each branch of the service, in addition to the American, Illinois, and POW-MIA flags. It will be located at Central Park by the Roundhouse.
