A new K-9 unit will join the Wood River Police Department later this year.   The city received a $7,000 grant to go toward the $10,000 cost for the new animal, training and equipment.   Officer John Hoefert will become the new K-9 officer starting with picking out a new dog next month.

Hoefert will travel to Indiana to pick up the animal then the two will attend training with the Illinois State Police in Springfield for two months.  The need for a new dog comes after current K-9 officer Ordi will retire later this year and his partner Officer Chris Alfaro chose not to continue with a new dog.  One Ordi retires he’ll live with Alfaro.  Wood River officer Mike Young, and his dog Degan, is the other K-9 unit for the city.
