Wood River residents who have forgotten about or skipped out on an unpaid bill will soon have their debts settled without ever touching the money themselves. The Wood River City Council recently joined the Illinois comptroller’s local debt recovery program. The program will allow the village to recoup fees from residents’ state income tax refunds, payroll check, or other state payment.
The debt recovery program is going to be used to collect debts owed the city, according to Finance Director Tracy Kennett. He says they have turned over about $128,000 worth of delinquent accounts to the state just since the beginning of the year.
